Football humour is totally unique in the fact that in the majority of cases it is only understood by us fans. On occasion it is personal to such a degree that only the two clubs involved know exactly what it’s all about. The songs we sing are very much included in this banter.
A couple of seasons back after perhaps 20 years or more of remaining in our shadow, a totally first-choice Tottenham side defeated what was very much a side containing a majority of fringe players in the last four of the same competition as last night. Of course, a souvenir DVD followed.
Even more amusing, when in scraping a league point at our place that was so late the vast majority of their travelling attendees had already gone home, another digital visual offering hit the club shop shelves! Yep... for a draw!!
The song that echoed out into the night sky as we romped through extra time last night was both apt and highly amusing.
I can't be the only one who was there last night who can't stop whistling 'Give it Up' by KC and the Sunshine Band this morning, the tune given the Nasri treatment. Go on admit it, if you were there you are now smiling!
I am glad the vast, vast majority of Arsenal fans paid their respect to the passing of the late Bobby Smith in the correct manner. I know to the outside world it is shocking to think that some fans might not respect these situations but in reality it can happen. When our own Rocky Rocastle passed away the Tottenham fans remained completely silent during the period of silence before our next home against them. I for one will never forget that.
On a night that saw nine changes from the side that started up at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, only an offside goal, a blatant penalty that wasn't given in our favour and a wrongly given offside preventing Gibbo from doubling our lead stopped the tie from being well and truly over before the 'drama' of extra time.
For me Jack and Laurent were the pick of an outstanding performance by each and every one representing the red and white, the former totally dominating the midfield for the full 120 minutes, the latter looking stronger, quicker and more composed with every game.
The song writers among us need to get working on new pieces for the above mentioned two along with many others such as Marouanne, Gibbo and goalscorer Henri Lansbury as we move forward I feel. Please try and remember though, us fans like simple and catchy tunes!
So it's into the fourth round hat we go after a thoroughly entertaining evening, Saturday's draw preceeding our next encounter at home to West Brom.
After our last minute heartbreak on Saturday we need to get our league season back on the rails with three points.
For now however, I think we can all enjoy last night's mauling for just a little bit longer.
